Name that baby

It's a boy. OH, is it a boy. The ultrasound tech was in the middle of measuring the baby's head when he did a back flip and gave us an eyeful (the baby, not the ultrasound tech). Matt and I are really excited. Abby is getting there. Actually, she's not at all, but she will. She has to. Please LORD, let her get there.

Now we have the monumental task of choosing a name. Plenty of names out there to choose from. Except not. We have a few...challenges. And preferences. I am therefore soliciting the assistance of all 4 of my loyal blog readers. Below are the issues:

1. First off, I have given up on making any sense out of our initials, though if the name starts with A, M, E or N I guess that would be a bonus.

2. Our last name (which Matt won't allow me to say on here but it starts with a B and is one syllable and is also a common word) sounds funny with any names that start with a B, any names that are only 1 syllable, and any names that are also words. Which knocks out a LOT.

3. Abby and Ethan are both names that can't really be shortened, and I like that. Not totally committed to that, but I like it.

4. Matt will not stand for anything remotely "trendy". Ethan is cutting edge for him.

5. The middle name will likely be Matthew, so it should sound good with that.

6. It should kind of "go with" Abby and Ethan. This is hard to explain, but most people will know what I mean. We can't have Abby, Ethan and Frank, for example, because that just sounds strange. Also, it can't be too much like Ethan, so Evan and Easton are out. I get confused enough as it is.

7. There are lots of names I love that are not options because people we know or are related to have the audacity to already have that name. The nerve of some people.

I think that's it. I really need some ideas here. Help!!!

PS. If you came here from Facebook, please post here and NOT on Facebook, so I can keep track. You don't have to log in or anything.

We love the name Nicholas, but it would probably be shortened to Nick, which doesn't sound right with our last name. I'm not having anymore anyway...so it's yours!

I'll keep thinking!

Hey, I like Aaron Matthew. It's like Matthew Aaron! What about Caleb?

I like Aaron too! I chose short names as well. My boys are Grant, Ryan & Mason. Whatever you guys choose will be perfect!

I like Ryan Matthew B----. Abby, Ethan, and Ryan. Don't know what you would do with the R in AMEN besides RAMEN! What about Eli or Elijah?

I really like Aaron Matthew.. I think it is cute for a kid and great for an adult. It also goes really well with Abby and Ethan.

I also really like Ryan Matthew. Just an idea!

LOL!! I love it... name that baby... As I read your post, actually, I've been pondering names for your baby since you posted it was a boy! (I didn't even rate call from Abby on that one!!) Yeah right!! okay, i have been wondering what you would name the next B baby (oops, almost put that name out there and Matt would have killed me!)! I do like Aaron, Ryan, Caleb, Isaac... those go great with Matthew and aren't TOO trendy!! Wow, so exciting..i'll keep thinking, something we say may click!!

I like Aidan, if that's a possibility. And Aaron is a good one too. I say unless it's a close family member (say maybe first cousin), go ahead and use what you like. I like Nicholas too (and just tell people not to call him Nick). I love thinking up baby names :)

Play up the idea that Abby is going to be the only girl...she'll SO appreciate that when she's a teenager!

Harrison Matthew Bunch or whatever............
anything you choose will be great!

I knew I'd probably post again...and a third time! What about Peter? Even if they shorten it to Pete, it'd still sound cute.

Preston, maybe???

How about some options from babynamegenie.com? I'll leave in the suggestions for middle name, although Matthew would work in place of most of them. Gordon Mitchell, Silas Coleman, Sullivan Henry, Jarrett Samuel, Alden Wyatt, Troy Justin, Charles Micah, Todd Keith, Aiden Harold, Reid Kelton, Colin Vance . . .

This is too much fun!

From all the ones mentioned, I think I like Cooper.

I have to vote for Aaron -- I love it, and it really goes. Abby, Ethan and Aaron . . . nice! Levi? I DO have a preference for that name since it's Isaac's middle name, but I LOVE it. Levi Matthew sounds good.

I should keep my mouth shut -- we are ALL Old Testament ALL THE TIME over here. Our next baby will have to be Moses for goodness sakes!

I vote Aaron. I am partial because I have a Aaron James and Evan Michael.

Okay, before I read the other comments I thought of Aaron with Matthew. This was primarily because I love the name Aaron. But I do have an Aaron as a grandson. I say the Aarons have it! Your Aaron and mine would only be 4th cousins (I think!)

Ryan, Eli and Issac I like, but...I LOVE Grant - however, if we ever decide on another child and it is a boy, I will use that name. Just giving you fair warning! :-) How about Jacob? Or just Jake? One of my bestest friends little boy's name is Jake Matthew.

Um...do people realize that anyone can read the comments & now the entire world knows your last name? Don't tell Matt. This information combined with the housekeepers continuing to come may put him over the top! Don't have any new names though we still like Ian or Isaac. As Chad says, you need the next vowel to start his name. The 2you adopt later can start with O & U!~Marla

i like evan, too! i should know how to find good boy names by now since i have three of them!!! :) what about nathan?? i'm trying VERY hard not to mess up your acronym!!! :) very excited for you!!! - Wendy p.s.- i was the one who said "preston" but i was posting that comment from my almost dead iPhone!!!

I have another one -- Liam. I think Liam Matthew would be great!

i like Titus (Bible name) although i am not sure if this would violate rule #4 of trendy name.. rich thinks that Ned, or Nub, or Nod would be good N's for AMEN--(I hope that I do not have to state the obvious here that Rich is really kidding about that) if you use a T name it could be AMENT a redneck version of AMEN. umm let's see we for A we like Alan, M would be to redundant with Matthew, and E we like Eli, Everett, We also like Kyle we understand that k would be breaking the rules possibly introducing a new word of MAKEN (Ha) or AKMEN just to name a few... Ok, are you going to comment if you like any of these ideas??? We don't expect a decision, but you have to have some kind of opinion! Or should we just assume you're going with Nub? :)

Melanie,
i am not sure who you are, but you are now my new best friend..we love the comment! NUB it is! Rich says that he has never been more proud!

Matt and Nancy don't comment on baby names... They're really weird about that. They just soak it all in and smile and don't say anything. It's really annoying!!! So... Don't expect much feedback from them on all of our comments.

nice post. thanks.

I've been friends with Nancy since the 7th grade...believe me, she's got opinions on the names! :) She and Matt are too polite to give any negative feedback (except for Nub...I'm sure she wouldn't mind giving an opinion on that one!).

ahh come on what's wrong with NUB?

As long as you don't name the kid Kal El (as in Superman, like Nicholas Cage) or Apple, I think you will be alright! Connor or Cooper is still my favorite, although Renee's suggestion of Noah is probably #3. Good luck on the name search!

LindaM said...

Nub is the best one yet- or some of the ones I've sent you in text messages- though I am fond of Aaron Matthew or Noah Matthew! for very evident reasons- I also agree with the person who said Apple or Spiderman are good- Decisions, Decisions- Hey, ask mom, she will have a good entry I feel sure-

Did you see my latest blog post? You could name him Ebelskiver (any Danish lineage on either side?), and then your initials could be AEMEN and still sound like "amen". :)

Hope you guys are having as much fun with this as we are! :)

The perfect name came to me this morning...ready.... It's Samuel! Abby would probably go for it since she is partial to a certain little fella with that name. And your initials would spell AMENS because with two little boys you will be sending up a lot of prayers, hence you will be saying a lot of amens!! Get it?! Pair that with the fan favorite Aaron and you are done!!
